Heartbreaking news hit Midlothian, Illinois when law enforcement shot and killed a security guard who had already stopped the reported potential murderer.
WGN-TV reported that a group of drunk patrons was asked to leave from Manny’s Blue Room Bar around four in the morning. One man took issue with this and returned to open fire on the bar.
Jemel Roberson was on security that shift and seeing it as his responsibility threw himself upon the attacker. Witness statements allege that Roberson subdued the unnamed shooter, forcing him to the ground and holding him under gun point.
Tragically when police got there, they saw Roberson as the threat and shot him down.
Witness Adam Harris said of the event that, “Everybody was screaming out, ‘Security!’ He was a security guard. … And they still did their job, and saw a black man with a gun, and basically killed him.”
Midlothian police have issued only the following statement, “Upon arrival officers learned there were several gunshot victims inside the bar. A Midlothian Officer encountered a subject with a gun and was involved in an Officer involved shooting. The subject the Officer shot was later pronounced deceased at an area hospital.”
As the incident involves an officer-involved shooting it will be investigated by the Illinois State Police.
Roberson’s friends say that he had hoped to become a police officer himself one day.
Knowing Roberson from church, Reverend Patricia Hill lamented, “He was getting ready to train and do all that stuff, so the very people he wanted to be family with, took his life.”
