Government officials report that a suicide bomber attacked Islamic religious scholars in the Afghan capital of Kabul, taking the lives of more than 50 people.
Interior Ministry spokesperson Najib Danish, stated that 80 or more people had been injured in the blast.
“A suicide bomber detonated his explosives inside a wedding hall where Islamic religious scholars had gathered to commemorate the anniversary of the Prophet Mohammad’s birth,” Danish said.
Reports indicate the attacker targeted a banquet room in the Uranus wedding hall. The large complex is made up of numerous banqueting halls and is in close proximity to the Kabul airport.
Basir Mujahid, a spokesman for Kabul police stated that, “Hundreds of Islamic scholars and their followers had gathered to recite verses from the holy Quran to observe the Eid Milad-un-Nabi festival at the private banquet hall.”
At the time of this report, no organizations have claimed the attack.
