Russia has seized three Ukranian naval ships near Crimea and refuses to release them despite Western pushes to do so.
In response, Ukraine’s President Poroshenko is trying to get parliament’s approval to decree martial law, to rally a defense against possible Russian invasion.
Poroshenko also made a televised address to calm opponents that such a decree would not impede civil liberties or delay next years elections.
Russia and Ukraine have been at odds since the 2014 annexation fo Crimea. Yet this new issue could push the two into open confrontation.
This seems even more likely when it was revealed that the Ukrainian vessels took fire from the Russian ships. While no fatalities have been reported, 3 Ukrainian sailors were wounded and 24 total sailors have been detained by the Kremlin.
