President Donald Trump has previously stated that he would pull federal research funding from colleges that failed to protect free speech. Now he is set to sign an executive order putting his words into action.
Trump had issued warning to college campuses back on March 2nd in response to Hayden Williams, a conservative activist who was assaulted while recruiting for Turning Point USA at the University of California, Berkeley.
While the president commended Williams for taking “a hard punch in the face for all of us,” he was clear that such behavior cannot be allowed to continue.
While it’s unclear exactly how the order would be enforced, the president’s son, Donald Trump Jr. tweeted his excitement over the victory for freedom of speech in the United States.
While not related to free speech, the order will also force the Education Department to modify the College Scorecard website to give potential students realistic figures on college programs. The order will stipulate that the department publish data that shows graduates’ median wages, loan debt and default rates. Useful information when trying to decide one’s future career.
